Book of the Month: God's Plan For America Series

This series is probably my favorite set of books. I've read the first one at least three times. Clearly written and thoroughly researched, these volumes are an absolute must-have.

Summary:

The Light and The Glory covers the years 1492 - 1793. The first book in the series, it examines numerous issues including Christopher Columbus' obsession with gold, John Smith, Jamestown, and why it failed, the Pilgrims, Plymouth, and why they succeeded, the Puritans and the issue of the Salem Witch Trials, whether or not America was justified in its revolt against England, and why George Washington was indeed a Christian.

From Sea to Shining Sea covers the years 1787 - 1837. It takes an in-depth look at the war of 1812, the Battle of the Alamo, the issue of slavery, the differences between the north and the south, and the rumblings of civil war.

Sounding Forth the Trumpet covers the years 1837 - 1860. The final book picks up where the previous one left off: America on the eve of civil war. Opening with member of the House of Representatives, JQA, ardently seeking to put an end to slavery, the authors then review the Mexican-American War and continue on to the Compromise of 1850, California Gold Rush, Underground Railroad, Kansas-Nebraska Act, Fulton Street Meetings, John Brown and the raid on Harper's Ferry, and finally finish with Abraham Lincoln's campaign against Sen. Stephen Douglas and the former's election to the Presidency.

Pro's:

The authors superbly capture and convey the facts of our nation's history from a Christian perspective. No rewriting history or ignoring the Christian backgrounds of many of our founding fathers. An astounding amount of research has gone into each book and you can expect to come away with a greater understand of our nation's early history.

Con's:

The series stops at the year 1860! I was extremely displeased to discover no further volumes were being written (both authors have since passed away). I had looked forward to reading about the Civil War but I suppose my search for a reliable book on that period will go on.

My rating for this series is:

5 out of 5 stars (I loved it and would recommend it to anyone).

  2. When I was 5-6, we owned (and I read) the children's version of The Light and The Glory. This book, more than any other, first gave me a Providential view of history, so it will always be special to me. When I was 8-9, we bought the other two books and I enjoyed them too (and was also disappointed when they ended at 1860). I'd like to read the full-length versions someday soon!

    Blessings,
